What to do after you apply to a job (a checklist for the next 10 days)

, , 3 min read

Most of the advice about job hunting stops at "submit your application". But what you do in the days after is where a lot of the outcome is decided. The good news is that it is a short, repeatable routine. Here is a checklist for the first ten days.

Right away (within an hour)

Log the application. Company, role, the link to the posting, the date, and the resume version you sent. Postings get taken down, and you will want the description back before an interview. A tracker or spreadsheet works; the important thing is that it is captured while you still remember the details.

Save the job description. Copy it somewhere you control. When the call comes three weeks later, you will be glad.

Set the next step. Write down what happens next and when. For most applications: "follow up in seven days". Put the date in the record, not just in your head.

Day 1 to 3

Find a person. Look for the recruiter, the hiring manager, or someone on the team on LinkedIn. You are not sending a pitch yet. You are learning who they are, which makes a later message much warmer.

Skim the company. Spend fifteen minutes on their product, recent news, and the team. If a screening call arrives fast, you will be ready.

Watch your inbox and phone. Some recruiters move quickly, and a missed call from an unknown number is a common way to lose momentum.

Day 7 to 10

Send a short follow-up. If you have a contact, a brief, polite note is enough. Templates and timing are in the follow-up email guide.

Reach out to one person. A short message to someone at the company, asking a question about the team, can put your name in front of a human. Keep it specific and low-pressure.

Update the record. Note that you followed up and set the next date.

Keep the pipeline moving

The mistake to avoid is waiting on one application. Treat each as a thread you have started and can leave alone, then go start another. A steady weekly rhythm beats hoping a single one lands. If you are unsure how many to send, read how many jobs to apply to.

If you hear back

  • A rejection. Update the status, and if it feels right, reply thanking them and asking to be considered for future roles. Then move on.
  • A screen or interview invite. Put the date and time on a calendar with a reminder. jobwyre puts each interview round on a calendar you can subscribe to in Apple or Google Calendar, with a reminder beforehand.
  • Silence. After one follow-up, one more nudge, and then a note to yourself to stop checking.

Let something else do the remembering

The whole routine depends on remembering dates and next steps. If you use Claude or ChatGPT, you can connect it to your board over MCP and ask "which applications need a follow-up this week?" and get a quick answer instead of hunting through your notes.
