The best free job application trackers (and what free really gets you)

, , 3 min read

Almost every job application tracker advertises a free plan. Free is real, but it means different things in different tools, and the difference shows up in the middle of your search, not on day one. Here is how to read a free tier before you build your search on top of it.

The four ways "free" is limited

A cap on entries. You can add a fixed number of jobs or applications, then hit a wall. This bites people with an active search, because a few weeks of serious applying can pass the cap.

A cap on a feature you actually need. The board is free, but reminders, calendar sync, exports, or integrations sit behind a paid plan.

A time limit. A "free trial" is not a free plan. It is a countdown.

Free forever, but slim. The basics stay free with no card, and the extras are optional. This is the friendliest model, provided the basics cover what you need.

What to check on any free plan

Before you commit, look for the answers to these:

  1. Is there a limit on the number of applications or jobs?
  2. Can I put interview dates somewhere that reminds me?
  3. Can I get my data out if I leave?
  4. Does the free plan require a card?
  5. What happens to my data if I do not upgrade?

If a product will not answer one of these clearly, treat that as an answer.

Free options, by kind

Free boards with extras. Seekario advertises a free kanban board with one-click job import. Huntr and Teal have free tiers alongside paid resume tools. Careerflow has a free tier as well. Check each for the current limits.

Free with autofill or automation. LoopCV offers a free tier for its automated search and tracking. Simplify is free to use for autofill and tracking, with paid options above that.

Free and purpose-built for tracking. jobwyre has a Free plan for an active search: 30 manual job adds a month, the full board, the interview calendar, and read-only API and AI access. Email reminders come with Pro and Max. Paid plans start at $4.99 a month and add AI write access and higher limits.

Free because you build it. A Google Sheets tracker, a Notion board, or a Trello board costs nothing, ever. You get no built-in interview reminders and no purpose-built interview calendar. Start from our free template.

When a paid plan is worth it

Paying makes sense when a specific limit blocks you, not before. If you are sending a few applications a week, a free plan is almost always enough. If you are sending dozens, check the cap first. If you want an assistant to update your board for you, that is usually a paid feature, since it lets software make changes on your behalf.

The cheapest tracker is the one you keep using

A free tool you abandon in week two costs more than a paid one you use. The spreadsheet vs app post covers when a spreadsheet stops being enough, and how to track job applications gives a system that works in any free tool.
