A job tracker for your software engineer job search

A software engineer job search is a parallel process. At any moment you may have a recruiter screen scheduled, a take-home due Friday, an onsite next week, and an offer deadline creeping up at a company you have almost forgotten. The number of concurrent loops is what makes engineers lose track, not any single application.
What is different about an engineering search
- Multi-stage loops. Recruiter screen, technical phone screen, take-home, onsite, team match. Each stage has its own date.
- Take-homes and deadlines. A due date that matters as much as an interview.
- Offer timing. When offers arrive at different times, you need to see all of them and their deadlines at once, so you can ask for extensions.
- Compensation detail. Base, equity, bonus, and level differ, and you want them next to each other.
What to track per company
| Field | Why |
|---|---|
| Stage | Where you are in the loop |
| Next step and date | What is due and when |
| Interviewers | Names help when you write thanks or follow up |
| Take-home deadline | Separate from interview dates |
| Level and comp | So offers can be compared later |
| Notes | Topics covered, questions asked, what to review |
Log topics after each round, while it is fresh. Systems design, data structures, behavioral: a line on what came up is useful if there is a later round.
Stack interviews, then compare
If you can, cluster your interviews so offers arrive close together. Then put each offer's numbers in the same place. A board where every company has a comparable record beats a pile of emails when it is time to decide.
Calendar and reminders
Your calendar is your source of truth for what is happening this week. jobwyre puts each interview round on a calendar you subscribe to in Apple or Google Calendar, with a reminder beforehand, so a technical screen does not slip past because it lived in a spreadsheet cell.
Automate the bookkeeping
Engineers tend to want to script things, and that is a reasonable instinct for tracking. jobwyre has a REST API, and a built-in MCP server that lets Claude, ChatGPT, or Claude Code read and update your board. You can say "add Acme, senior backend engineer, screen Thursday at 2pm" and it lands on the board. Read-only access works on every plan, and write access needs Pro or Max.
If you work in Claude Code, the connection is a short JSON config block that uses your API key. The full walkthrough is in how to connect Claude or ChatGPT to your job board.
Prep is a tracking problem too
Keep a running list of topics to review per company, and a short reference of your own stories for behavioral rounds. Store them with the job record so you can find them the night before, not in a folder you forgot.
Compare your options
If you are choosing a tool, see the best job application trackers in 2026 and the comparison pages. A spreadsheet is fine for a quiet search, but with several loops running, you will want reminders and a calendar. See jobwyre vs Google Sheets.
