Job search MCP servers: what they are and what to ask them

, , 3 min read

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that lets an AI assistant, such as Claude or ChatGPT, call an outside tool directly instead of you copying data in and out. A job search MCP server is one of those tools that holds your job search: applications, statuses, interview dates, notes.

If you have ever pasted a job description into a chat and then pasted the assistant's notes into a spreadsheet, you have done the job an MCP server does for you.

How it works in plain terms

The server exposes a small set of actions: list my jobs, get one job, create a job, update a job, check my usage. The assistant sees those as tools it can call. When you ask a question, it decides which tool to call, gets structured data back, and answers in normal language.

Your login is not handed to the assistant, and the tool does not see your chat history. What passes between them is only the specific tool calls.

What you can ask once it is connected

The value is in the questions. Some that work well on a job board:

  • "What is on my plate this week?" It lists your upcoming interviews and can point out applications that have gone quiet.
  • "Which applications have gone quiet for more than two weeks?"
  • "Summarize where I stand: how many applied, interviewing, and rejected."
  • "I just got off a call with Acme. Add a note that they want a portfolio and move them to interviewing."
  • "Schedule my Globex interview for Thursday at 2pm Eastern."

Ask the assistant to search before it changes anything, so it updates the right job instead of creating a duplicate.

What separates a good server from a poor one

Validation. The server should enforce the same rules as the app, so an assistant cannot write nonsense into your board.

Least privilege. Read-only should be a real option, not an afterthought.

No invented values. A good server nudges the assistant to ask you for a missing date rather than make one up.

Real records behind it. The server should sit on a proper tracker with a calendar and reminders, not just a text file.

The options

jobwyre runs an MCP server at https://jobwyre.app/api/mcp with five tools: list jobs, get a job, create a job, update a job, and check usage. It works with Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, and any MCP-compatible client. Read-only access is on every plan, and write access needs Pro or Max.

LoopCV also offers MCP integrations for Claude and ChatGPT, aimed at its automated applying. It is a different shape of tool, so compare what each does behind the connection.

Getting connected

Setup takes about two minutes and needs no key on the recommended path. The full walkthrough for Claude, ChatGPT, and Claude Code is in how to connect Claude or ChatGPT to your job board. For the case for using an assistant this way at all, see ChatGPT as a job application tracker.

Keep it safe

Start with read-only. Check what the assistant proposes before approving writes. Disconnect it from the Connected apps list on the Connect your AI page when you no longer need it. The point of MCP is that you stay in control of the door.
